How to Increase Personal Savings

I told hubby this weekend that we have got to get creative and figure out ways to save money towards our emergency fund. I have decided to cut back on the daily newpaper to just once per week (Sunday Onlyl...I have just GOT to have my coupons! lol), am looking into only getting the basics with DISH network (would love to get rid of it altogether, but hubby is a HUGE sports fan), have already trimmed $30.00 from the phone bill by signing up for a different package, trimmed the cell phone bill, but am still going through the budget, line by line, to see what other "pork fat" I can trim from it.

That got me thinking, but I can't dwell on it too much, that this is exactly what our Elected Officials need to do....trim some PORK FAT from the fatty mess that they call a budget! BLEAH! We frugal women could teach those people a thing or three! :)

Anyway, enough about that....I am on a mission here, and I won't stop until I figure out how to stock more $$ away in my meagre little savings account.

What are the little ways that you are saving that are adding up to some big bucks? I'd love to hear about it!

  1. When we got relocated here in Korea , our goal is to really save up money to pay off debts.. We cut off our cable here which saves us 50 bucks a month.

  2. Well, the hubby bought $100 worth of seeds and we freeze/can enough vegetables that I haven't bought any in over a year. And this year he sold enough of our extra produce to cover the cost of the seeds!

  3. Rose and Pricilla: I love your tips!! I especially like that you saved $50 bucks, Rose, and that you haven't had to buy any veggies for a year, Pricilla. That is amazing!

I have a garden, and I have frozen quite alot of green beans this year and last year. The savings does add up!

  4. My method of building up savings is to be CHEAP. Well, okay, frugal is a nicer word.

We eat at home instead of out, except for the occasional treat. I match sales and coupons to save 40-50% on my grocery bill. (And I am NOT a super couponer.)

We have the least expense internet, phone and cable packages and use prepaid cellphones.

We have also cut down on holiday spending...a LOT.

Wish I had a garden!! Good luck A.Marie!

  5. Hi Frances!! Good job on your frugality. I never really thought about using a prepaid cellphone instead of having a package...I need to look into that!

If you lived closer, I would share my garden produce with you. My cherry tomatoes are going crazy right now...they are bursting off of the vine, there are so many. My Mom and Dad and I picked tons last evening and they shared them with the people in their apt. complex.

  6. A.Marie, congrats on cutting your expenses and slimming down your cell bill. I will mention, however, that just because you've achieved some wireless savings already does not mean you cannot save more. I work in the consumer advocacy division of the company Validas, where we electronically audit and subsequently reduce the average cell bill by 22 percent through our website, http://www.fixmycellbill.com . Put simply, Validas guards against frivolous and unnecessary charges that inflate your cell bill more than it should be for your usage. You can find out for free if fixmycellbill.com can modify your plan to better suit your needs by going to the website.

For more info, check out Validas in the national news media, most recently on Fox News at http://www.myfoxtampabay.com/dpp/consumer/conlaw/lower_cell_phone_bills_072409 .

Good luck to further reducing those wireless costs.

  8. I know every one is trying what you are doing, without trimming off too much. I wish you luck on this, have a great week.

  9. I need to save more too. It just seems like the more we earn, the more we spend. With two in high school, it seems there is never enough $$. Ugh.
